But it is certainly not: with its 45 different sorting categories, the little town’s residents almost reached their goal to produce no trash at all by 2020. Welcome to Kamikatsu, Japan. Just finished a couple sketches for some upcoming Kuru Kuru Shop products. I am so excited! Yesterday we made another prototype for one of the bags I designed. I had no idea how satisfying it would feel to hold a tangible object based off of some drawings I did. We are going to continue modifying things until the material, size, durability, functionality, etc. is perfect! Everything should be ready in the next couple days. Here's a picture of one of my favorite things in the shop: our jackets! Each jacket is handmade and completely unique. The exterior design comes from recycled Japanese Carp Flags that would otherwise be thrown in the trash. ... See MoreSee Less

Last week I visited the local Junior High School to watch the carbon-neutral lesson given to the kids. Because of the abundance of wood here in Kamikatsu, it is necessary to chop and burn wood for the livelihood of the surrounding forests. The kids sat in neat rows while listening to a representative from The Zero-Waste Academy explain why we should use less electricity, use the local resources, etc. We then separated into two groups- half of the students hiked up into the forest to cut down thin young trees, while the other half stayed at the school and sliced small logs of wood to more manageable sizes so they could be dried effectively. I stayed down at the Junior High and helped the kids use a small machine that safely cut the logs of wood. When I heard that the students would be using saws/machinery, I was quite skeptical. But, these kids were all extremely well-behaved and mature who definitely can be trusted to enjoy activities and interactive lessons like this one. I was definitely very impressed. So great that the students can be introduced to a more conscious lifestyle at such a young age. It wasn't until I was about halfway through High-School that I learned about the serious impact my actions had on the environment. // Here is a picture of the short lesson before the students dispersed into their groups! ...
